ANSI
FVIR Water Heaters
A NEW
& Safer Standard
As of July 1, 2003, all residential gas water heaters must meet a new American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard, which will make them safer for consumers. Flammable Vapor Ignition Resistant (FVIR) water heaters, a brand new technology that has the entire U.S. water heating industry sizzling, are now available for sale to consumers.
Vapor
Ignition Resistant
Although current water heaters are safe when installed, used and maintained correctly, occasional accidents have occurred due to improper storage of volatile liquids such as gasoline. These liquids spilled near a gas-burning appliance cause the vapors to ignite, causing flames. The new ANSI FVIR water heaters are completely resistant to igniting flammable vapors.
New
Flame Arrestor Plate
The biggest change in this technology is a new flame arrestor plate that prevents combustion air and flammable vapors from traveling back through the plate, outside the water heater and into the room. So should a flammable vapor incident occur, it would be contained within the water heater, protecting the surrounding area. The older version of arrestor plates were easily clogged with lint, dust and oil, thus creating an environment for possible ignition.
Consumers
Urged
This new ANSI standard applies to 30, 40 and 50-gallon gas-fired, atmospheric water heaters with outputs of 75,000 BTU per hour or less, and applies to both natural gas and liquid propane units.
Consumers owning one of these units are urged to update to the new ANSI – FVIR technology as soon as possible.
